How do Super Bowl Squares work?

Super Bowl Squares is a popular game played at Super Bowl parties. The game is played on a 10x10 grid, creating 100 individual squares. Participants claim squares before the game begins.

Once all 100 squares are claimed, numbers from 0 to 9 are randomly assigned to the columns (representing the AFC team's score) and the rows (representing the NFC team's score). You can use our free tool above to instantly generate these randomized numbers!

How do you win at Squares?

At the end of each quarter (or halftime and final score), the winning square is determined by looking at the last digit of each team's score.

For example, if the score at halftime is Chiefs 14, 49ers 10:
The winning square is the intersection of the column assigned the number 4 (Chiefs) and the row assigned the number 0 (49ers).

Why randomize the numbers last?

In football, scores are heavily dependent on touchdowns (7 points) and field goals (3 points). Because of this, certain ending numbers (like 0, 3, and 7) are much more likely to occur than others (like 2, 5, or 8).

If the numbers 0-9 were assigned before participants picked their squares, everyone would just pick the squares corresponding to 0, 3, and 7. By randomizing the axis numbers after the grid is full, it ensures everyone has a fair, random chance of winning.
